History

Formative years
05 Nov 2009

Formed in 1908 as Hambleden St. Mary's, according to first publications of the Hambleden Church Magazine, The President at this time was the Hon.W.F.D. Smith of what was to become the W.H. Smith Family.
Playing their games on the Dene (or Burrow Croft as it was first know), the first Home game being with Harrington(Reading).
First taste of success came in 1926-27 season, when the team won the Henley Town & Commrades Challenge Cup.
Then again in 1929-30 winning the league.

AFTER THE WAR: In the early 1950's Hambleden played its football in the Reading & District League, In 1963-64 they gained promotion from Division 3 to Division 2 by virtue of the runners-Up spot.
In the 1967-68 season they won the Division 2 Title, then to go into the top division and gain the Runners-Up spot the following season 68/69.

The Succesful 70's
05 Nov 2009

The Most Succesful Years came in the 70's under the Captaincy of Brian Faulkner and the Managership of Joe Hayward, the mid 70's were an enjoyable time for the players and supporters at the Dene.
Winning the Reading Junior Cup in the 1971-72 Season, In 1975-76 between the 1st Team & Reserves Hambleden Won a staggering five trophies, and the 1st Team went on to win the Reading Combination Premier Division for another Three seasons running.
A short spell in the Wycombe & District Ercol Senior League followed from 1979 to 1984, Winning the Premier Division title at the first time of asking in the 1979-80 season, and finishing Runners-up in the 1981-82 season.
Hambleden then joined the newly formed Chiltonian Football League (as a founder member), from 1984 to the early 1990's, after which it became too expensive so they re-joined the Wycombe & District Football League.

21 Years later
06 Nov 2009

Twenty One years after the last success in the early 1980's, Hambleden Football Club finally won some more Silverware in 2001/02 with the first team winning the Wycombe & District Junior Cup.
By winning this cup and the Reading Junior Cup back in the 1970's The club have achieved a feat that no other Wycombe based side has managed to date. It was actually a double success for the club in this particular season, With the Reserve team gaining promotion from Division 2 as Runners-Up.
In the 2002-03 season also won the Division 1 title, the following season they were Runners-Up in the Premier Division, and also reached the Reserve League Cup Final losing out on penaltie kicks to local rivals Lane End Reserves.
But unfortunately the First team in the 2002-03 season were Relegated from the Senior Section, Which meant that although the Reserves were Runner-Up in the Premier Division they also had to be relegated,(crazy league rules).
In 2004-2005 however, The First Team went straight back up to the Senior Section as Champions of the Premier Division, and they also reached the Reading Evening Post Junior Cup Final but losing out to Reading side Rabson Rovers.
Unfortunately for all the First Teams success the previous season, In the early part of the 2005-2006 season the Reserve Team had to be disbanded due to lack of players.
In 2007-2008 season Hambleden's fortunes were mixed,They reached the Maidenhead Norfolkians' Senior Cup Semi-Finals, losing out to Iver Heath Rovers, Who went on to lose the Final to Hambleden's league opponents Winchmore Hill.
Hambleden also had a lucrative 2nd Round tie in the Wycombe & District Senior Cup, against BGS Football League Division South & West side Burnham, Which was played under lights on a freezing cold December evening, The score line a flattering 9-0 in favour of the hosts.
Hambleden eventually finished mid-table in the Wycombe Senior League that season.

The Centenary
06 Nov 2009

The 2008-2009 season was to be our Centenary, With the club changing it's colours from the plain Yellow shirts that have been worn for what seems like forever, To the very first colours of Gold & Black Stripes.
But only another mid-table position in the league followed, and a slightly better Wyconbe Senior Cup, Losing out to Minerva South Midland League side Holmer Green in the Quarter Finals.
We did however introduce a youth Team this season at Under 13's level, Aptly named Hambleden Wasps.

2009-2010
14 Oct 2010

Folowing the dissapointment of a trophieless centenary season we had hoped our fortunes might change this season, with the re-introduction of a reserve team and the addition of some new players hopes were high.
However fortunes were mixed, The first team started the season brightly and were in a strong league position at the end of janurary but a loss at home in the Wycombe senior cup 1/4 final started a downward spirral, and defeat 2 games later in the semi-finals of the Tom Hooker league cup at home left the squad deflated, we then went on to only pick up 11 points from a possible 30 from our last ten league games which meant only a 5th place finish although we did finish on 36 points our best in the senior league and best total for a very long time.
The Reserves basically had two different squads for the season, with some players leaving after about 4 games, then having to give away 6 points while we found replacements, to teams they later went on to beat was a bitter pill to swallow. Then again even more players left at christmas and we also replaced them too,so it was no suprise that they only won 5 games and managed 2 draws all season.
Having to raise a side for 30, actually 28 laegue games and 3 cup games, and a 14th place finish was a credit to all the players that stayed andthose who joined throughout the season & the management team of Mark Hobson & Paul Rodrigues.
